What is a Futurity?

A Futurity is a prize program for young horses which awards purses made up of the nomination or entry fees paid over a period of time by participants.

The Carolina's Futurity actually consists of three divisions, the weanling division, the yearling division, and the two year old division. The weanling and yearling divisions are further divided into open and amateur classifications. Professional trainers, amateurs, and juvenile exhibitors can show in the open class. Only amateur or juvenile exhibitors (handlers and tailers) can show in the amateur class. The two year old division is divided into three gaited, fine harness, and in-hand classifications which are open to professional trainers, amateurs, and juvenile exhibitors.

Nomination in the futurity begins with the weanling year and in order to maintain  eligibility to show in the Futurity, fees must be paid each year to keep the entry nominated for the particular divisions. For entries in the weanling division, fees must also be paid to nominate the sire and dam.

General Futurity Information

2024 WINNERS

The 2025 Carolinas’ Futurity classes will be held at the September 2025 UPHA Chapter 12 North Carolina State Championship Horse Show in Raleigh, NC.  In-Hand classes (Weanling Amateur Handler and Open, and Yearling Amateur Handler and Open) are closed classes.  Only Carolinas’ Futurity nominees in good standing are allowed to enter.  In-Hand horses may be shown in either Amateur Handler OR Open, but not both.  Show management and a Carolinas’ Futurity officer determine the deadline for changing classes.  2025 CF Late Weanling nominees are NOT allowed to show at the 2025 competition.
The three performance classes (2-YR Old Fine Harness, 2-YR Old 3-Gaited, 3-YR Old Park Braced or Natural Mane and Tail) are open classes.  Any 2-year old or 3-year old may enter whether they are nominated to the Futurity or not.  Non-nominees will NOT receive Futurity payouts.  Additional specifications and rules for showing are posted on the website.
Directions for Completing 2025 Forms
•    Everyone must complete page 1. I am trying to update my communications records and need current information.  No one will receive a payout until accurate tax information is provided.  1099’s for all monetary Futurity payouts will be sent to recipients.
•    Select the appropriate page for your weanling(s).  Use: page 2 to nominate a weanling for the weanling year only ; page 3 to nominate a weanling through their 2-yr old season; page 4 to nominate a weanling through their 3-yr old season; page 6 if you have a LATE Weanling nomination.  This is the only opportunity to back enter a horse in the Futurity.  We do not encourage this option for late foals, but understand the necessity for purchased weanlings.  LATE Weanling nominees may NOT compete in 2025.

•    If you purchased your stallion service at the 2024 Carolinas’ Live Auction, you do not owe a stallion nomination fee (it is included in the service purchase fee).  If the sire is an “outside stallion”, you must pay a $ 75 stallion nomination fee.
•    Everyone pays mare and foal nomination fees EXCEPT those eligible for a Stallion Donor nomination.
•    Use page 7 if you, as owner, or your stallion’s handler donated a stallion service to the 2024 Carolinas’ Futurity Live Auction AND it sold.  Please accept our thanks for your support.  You or your stallion’s handler are also eligible to nominate one (1) 2025 weanling sired by the stallion for the weanling year only at no cost.  This opportunity is non-transferrable. Renewal is necessary in subsequent years to maintain Futurity eligibility.

What is the purpose of a Futurity?

Futurities are held to encourage the breeding, registration, and showing of American Saddlebred horses. Showing a foal in a futurity enhances its value and increases its earning potential; the value of the sire and dam may also be enhanced through the success of their progeny shown in futurities. Amateurs and juveniles, as well as professionals, have the opportunity to show young horses in futurities. The experience should be entertaining, to both audience and participants, and should present the American Saddlebred at its best, providing opportunity for fun, competition, and good sportsmanship.
